Coordinator Youth Justice - Alexandra

At Oranga Tamariki–Ministry for Children, we want to ensure that all tamariki are in loving whānau and communities where oranga tamariki can be realised.

Our focus is on children and young people who are at significant risk of harm now and into the future as a consequence of their family environment, their own complex needs or who have offended or may offend in the future.

We are now looking for a Youth Justice Coordinator to join us in Alexandra to support our team located across South Canterbury/Central Otago.

The Youth Justice team work in partnership with young offenders and their families, iwi, courts, Police Youth Aid, youth workers, youth community organisations and schools to find the right local solutions to reduce the rate and severity of youth re-offending. 

The Youth Justice Coordinator works with families and the wider community to hold the young person accountable and to address the factors which have led them to offend. The Youth Justice Coordinator will incorporate a restorative justice approach within their practice. They utilise the combined knowledge of community resources, networks and opportunities to create an alternative offending free future for the young person.    

Our Youth Justice Coordinators are also responsible for managing Family Group Conferences (FGCs) in terms of the Children, Young Persons and their Families Act 1989. 

As a Youth Justice Coordinator, you will bring excellent group facilitation and mediation skills, along with experience in the youth justice/social services sector and sound knowledge of youth law and/or practice. The right candidate will bring an interest in improving the community and through their networking and excellent communication skills they will have the capability to implement change successfully.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Skilled networking and community relationship building.
  • Energy and motivation with the ability to work flexible hours.
  • The ability to work in culturally appropriate ways with children, young people and their families.
  • A full driver licence.
