Research Labratory Technician - Animal Health

The Role and Opportunity

AgResearch is looking for a dedicated and hardworking Research Technician to join their Animal Health Team located in Grasslands, Palmerston North. This is a Fixed Term position for 2 years and will be reporting to the Science Team Leader, Animal Health.

This will include:

  • Performing the research.
  • Co-ordinating resources and equipment.
  • Collecting data.
  • Providing preliminary analysis.
  • Reporting of results for publications and reports in alignment with the AgResearch Statement of Corporate Intent.

In addition the role will involve:

  • Assisting the Team in developing and testing vaccines to reduce methane emissions in ruminants and reduce infectious diseases in livestock.
  • Production of recombinant proteins in E. coli and yeast.
  • Conducting ELISAs and Western blotting to determine antibody binding to vaccine antigens.
  • RNA extractions and PCR analyses.
  • Some management of HSNO-exempt laboratories (PC1 and PC2) and other laboratory management duties.

What you will be doing:

  • Conducting research to meet specific objectives by selecting and adapting from available methods those best suited to the immediate problem.
  • Participates in all phases of the research process from problem definition through to reporting of findings.

Your ideal background

  • Relevant post-graduate qualification OR undergraduate qualification (e.g. Microbiology, Chemistry) with relevant experience. Applicants with less experience can apply, but if successful may be offered the position at a lower grade.
  • Thorough understanding of the research process and analytical procedures.
  • Has background knowledge and in-depth expertise in own specialist area.
