Senior Legal Counsel

Who are we?

At Xero, we’re here to make running a business beautiful. By making small business more efficient every day, connecting them with big business technology and empowering a community behind them, their potential is limitless. When that happens, we’re not only helping small business, we’ll be building a stronger economy that can change the world.

How you’ll make an impact

An exciting opportunity currently exists in our expanding global legal team for an Auckland based Senior Legal Counsel. A key hire for the business, the role will identify and proactively manage legal matters for Xero in the region. Reporting to the Wellington based GM Legal and Business Advisory, and part of a dynamic international legal team supporting a global digital platform, this is no ordinary in-house role!

Overview of Key Responsibilities

  • Work as an integrated part of the global legal team to provide legal services on global or platform matters including procurement, product support, customer support and security
  • Work closely with Xero’s commercial team in your region to help drive strategic relationships and initiatives for Xero locally, but with a global mindset
  • Provide advice to senior managers on legal aspects of their defined areas (including across security, sales/marketing, customer experience, and product)
  • Drive and/or manage, within the global legal team, projects to manage workflow, improve operational efficiency, achieve global and regional education and training, and enable compliance
  • Take a lead role in reviewing, negotiating, and drafting key legal documents, such as vendor supply agreements, marketing partner agreements, data exchange agreements, integration agreements and procurement contracts
  • Ensure the business is informed and compliant with any relevant existing or proposed legislation that may impact the operations of the business
  • Contribute to internal policy and process development
  • Liaise and collaborate with legal team peers in all areas and regions to deliver holistic legal function outcomes
  • Assist with any M&A activity
  • Assist with investigating and responding to enquiries from law enforcement agencies and regulators
  • Liaise with and help manage Xero’s external legal advisors

What you’ll bring…

Our ideal candidate brings 7+ years PQE experience, with in-house experience highly desirable, ideally in a fast-paced or high growth business. Outstanding communication, contract drafting and business partnering skills are key. You thrive in providing strategic commercial advice in a consumable and plain English way. You have solid experience of technology-related transactions and are able to extend to compliance, policy, governance and advisory areas. You have a bias to innovation, agility, collaboration and natural language communication. You’ll be comfortable communicating your ideas with your global colleagues, both in the legal team and beyond. You have implemented scalable solutions to empower your business stakeholders. You are excited by new ways of working and thinking outside the box. You have a practical, influential and results-focused attitude and, above all, you bring a #human approach to the law.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a commercially savvy lawyer to take the next step with a progressive and innovative business with a global footprint. This is preferably a full-time role but for the best candidate we will have flexibility.

At Xero, we champion innovation, foster inclusion, and celebrate success. We also live and breathe our values everyday. As #human is one of Xero's values, please outline in your application what makes you #human at work, and how do you think a legal function can be more #human?
