Who are we?

Macpac is New Zealand’s original outdoor brand. Founded in Christchurch in 1973, we’ve made it our business to show people that life is better when you’re outside. Today, we are happy when we’re helping people push their boundaries. We’re a socially conscious business, and we operate in a way that is both ethical and sustainable. As a leader in the outdoor retail space, we have a responsibility to protect and preserve our wild places, and we take that responsibility very seriously. When all is said and done, we are adventurers - and our goal is to facilitate adventure for as many people as we possibly can. You can read more about our history, design philosophy, ethics and environmental policies on our website.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a passionate, skilled and approachable professional to join our team. Macpac team members are:

  • Adventure lovers, who are happiest when embracing the great outdoors.
  • Eco-warriors, who walk the talk when it comes to sustainability.
  • Experts, who love sharing their knowledge.
  • Team players, who understand that a good team is greater than the sum of its parts.

That’s where you step in.

We’re looking for a dynamic, innovative and self-motivated graphic designer with a minimum of 2 years’ experience to join our small in-house creative team. You will have multiple projects running at any one time, and work at the pace of a retail organisation. Being at the centre of an exciting marketing department with a range of projects to get your teeth into, you’ll need to be organised, efficient and someone who consistently strives to achieve.

Reporting to the Creative Team Leader, you’ll take ownership for the creative design of a wide range of marketing material – from EDM’s & web banners, retail POS, print media and catalogues, to packaging and product graphics.  You’ll be a significant contributor to the marketing department, leading design projects to drive engagement, and will have the scope to pitch your own ideas and initiatives.

Your passion for stretching creative boundaries will be key in this role – as you help drive the brand further to become world class.  You’ll have an eye for quality, and further develop the standards of the brand’s presentation and integrity.

Skill you will need:

  • Good understanding of the design process, plus the ability to take initiative and lead projects from beginning to end
  • Photoshop – basic image processing such as clipping and retouching
  • InDesign – master pages, grids, paragraph styles
  • You also have experience and working knowledge of pre-press, and need to be comfortable working with print suppliers across different formats
  • Strong conceptualiser – the ability to present concepts professionally to a high standard.
  • Adobe CC suite, PC based

Why should you want to work with us?

  • Macpac is a rapidly growing retail business, offering great opportunities for professional and personal development.
  • We promote from within the business, and our network reaches across New Zealand and Australia.
  • Our team is full of adventurers - you’ll never be without an adventure buddy again!
  • Our culture is all about getting outside, embracing the adventure community and taking responsibility for the way our actions impact the world around us.
  • Our team discount on equipment and apparel is ridiculously good.

This is a full time position based at our Support Office in Hillsborough, Christchurch.

To apply, please submit a cover letter explaining why you’re the right person for this role, and a CV (including a link to your portfolio) via Seek. Please note again that we are looking for someone with a minimum of 2 years graphic design experience for this role.

Applications close 7th February
