Travel Advisor

The people and technology at the Wellington Transport Operations Centre (WTOC) are the eyes, brains and heart behind our roads and signals in the Central and Lower North Island and South Island of New Zealand.

They provide services that help road users have a safe and enjoyable journey whilst at the same time helping make smarter travel choices before or during their journeys.

WTOC have an exciting part time opportunity to join their vibrant team of Travel Advisors in an on-going capacity, around 18 hours per week. This position consists of rostered shift work with the need to cover mornings, evenings and weekends.

The role of a Travel Advisor exists to provide accurate and timely information to enable New Zealanders to make smarter travel choices. The Travel Advisors work shifts where they look to help source, co-ordinate, validate and/or communicate planned and unplanned events that impact on New Zealand’s state highway network.

Technical skills and specific experience

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be competent using social media technologies such as Twitter and Facebook.
  • A knowledge in transport and traveller information services would be advantageous.
  • Innovation and system improvement identification is desirable.
  • A passion in customer services and the ability to understand customer needs especially in the transport area is desirable.
  • The ability to build relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Practical skills in translating traffic operations into information suitable for road users (wordsmithing) is essential.
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to think outside the box and use initiative.
  • A good understanding of New Zealand road and highway network and geography.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications and ability to quickly learn new applications.

Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience in communications, customer information services, information/knowledge management would be advantageous.
