The Ministry acts in the world to make New Zealanders safer and more prosperous. They do this by building connections with and influencing other countries to advance New Zealand's interests, project New Zealand values and secure the outcomes that matter to New Zealand.

They pursue the Government's international priorities and provide advice to the Government on the implications for New Zealand of what is happening in the world.

The Ministry's Foreign Policy Officers support the Government in making decisions that affect New Zealand's foreign affairs and trade with the rest of the world. This includes contributing to policy recommendations, analysing trends in international political, trade and economic development, and helping to implement policy.

The Ministry's Development Officers have a strong interest in international development or humanitarian action and an appreciation of the principles of development effectiveness, including programme and activity management.

Across both functions there are opportunities to travel and serve abroad in the diplomatic service.
The Ministry want their people to reflect the diversity of New Zealand and other communities they represent - valuing and respecting the contributions of staff with diverse backgrounds. If you have transferable skills borne from career and life experience we are interested in hearing from you. You will need to be an NZ Citizen holding an undergrad degree with the ability to obtain an appropriate security clearance and the mobility to travel extensively for work and possible future postings.
