Who we are

Catalyst IT is a global team of skilled open source technologists. We specialise in developing, designing and supporting enterprise grade systems using open source technologies.

This is an opportunity for a junior developer to join an open source team and do open source development work on a daily basis in Wellington. Catalyst is the maintainer of the ePortfolio platform Mahara, and has been its main development company since its inception in 2006. We are looking for a junior developer to join our team to work on both community and client projects. As the primary maintainer of the Mahara project, we make final strategic decisions about code design, project infrastructure, and features that make it into core. We are the upstream project.

About the role

For this role you will need experience coding in scripted languages (ideally we are looking for any of PHP, Python, Ruby, or Perl) and proficiency in debugging HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. As you’ll be on the front line liaising with clients and community members, you will need excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. In this team you will be mentored by other more senior developers to help you develop your technical skills, but having experience with and understanding the technologies we’ve described will be a great help to you.

It would be a definite advantage if you have experience in PHP, are familiar with the use of Git for distributed development and the use of the Linux command-line. It would also help if you have experience working with databases (PostgreSQL in particular) and have strong analytical and problem-solving skills. An interest in or passion for open source would be the shining cherry on top of your application, so please be sure to mention this in your cover letter.

Why work for Catalyst?

Being a good employer is really important to us. We make sure our staff have the support they need to grow their skills, and we get together every Friday afternoon to relax, share company news from around the world, and celebrate the achievements of our staff.

We also offer health insurance, flexible working hours, plenty of training opportunities, and a great central location in Wellington.

Our hiring processes reflect our diversity policy which you can read in full here:
