EdTech Innovator (part time/casual)

In this role you will be an important part of one of the fastest growing educational facilities. We've taught over 100,000 children in just four years. Our role is to encourage the development of contemporary digital, scientific and technical theories and practices in young learners. The Role

Purpose of role:

  • To provide informative, engaging classes for students
  • To mentor, inspire, and develop other staff on The Mind Lab curriculum and activities

The purpose of The Mind Lab is to encourage the development of conceptual understanding of contemporary digital, scientific and technical theories and practices in young students between the core ages of 5 – 15 years and to develop the professional delivery skills for teachers using recognised digital pedagogies. Classes are taught through the development and delivery rich, multi-faceted experiences coupled with key cognitive processes including:

  1. Analysis and identification
  2. Identifying function, form and purpose
  3. Formulating ideas and theories
  4. Comparing and contrast
  5. Developing practical lessons / examples including science experimentation, robotics, computer programmes, animations etc.
  6. Testing
  7. Exploration and invention
  8. Challenges and research
  9. Reflection

Key Areas of Responsibility and Accountability:

Contribute to Course Development and Delivery for students

  • Lesson planning – coding, scripting languages, robotics, engineering, electronics, app development, science
  • Formulation of learning outcomes to demonstrate student learning
  • Assess and or assist with the development of teaching material, lesson plans etc for delivery

Delivery

  • The Mind Lab by Unitec in Gisborne aims to offer workshops for up to 60 school children per school day and a school holiday programme. The primary focus of the Edtech Innovator will be to teach school groups and children on the school holiday programme
  • Ensure lessons and resources used are approved and link back to the key education learning outcomes of The Mind Lab
  • Responsible for delivering a consistent high-quality education product to ensure all students receive the same high quality education experience
  • Use proven teaching practices in the learning environment
  • Create a non-threatening and creative learning environment
  • Apply practical knowledge, fun, innovation and high levels of participation into classes
  • Ensure the teaching environment encourages students to take own initiative, to think and problem solve and to build confidence

Administration

  • Maintain lesson plans and back-up files appropriately

Teamwork and Communication

  • Mentor and inspire students and teachers
  • Attend meetings and briefing sessions as required
  • Provide support and guidance to teachers and students as required
  • Participate in regular brainstorming sessions with the Gisborne team and wider National Team
  • Set up and clean up the classes before and after school groups
  • Communicate with Centre Director & Lab Manager when new resources are required

Monitor Trends

  • The EdTech is required to be ‘research active’ as a key requirement of their role.
  • Research time is allocated to support development of staff and to inform/influence
  • teaching practices and to continue to build expertise in the field of digital literacy,
  • technology or education.
  • Monitor trends and changing education needs
  • Research and evaluate emerging opportunities and integrate into lessons as appropriate
  • Provide amendments to the core curriculum and lessons to stay relevant
  • Share with the wider team, both in Gisborne and Nationwide
  • Be an active voice in social media by participating (positively) as an individual and as a Mind Lab employee who advocates for STEM and innovative 21st Century teaching practices.
