The Hockey Foundation is a charitable trust that raises funds to distribute grants to develop coaches, coaching programmes and education as the key to strong player development.

Hockey New Zealand’s purpose is to lead and support the future direction of Hockey in New Zealand. Our Strategy 2020 is to win on the world stage, deliver world class events, grow the hockey community and strengthen our business.

A vacancy has arisen for an experienced Communications and Media Manager to join our dynamic and fast paced environment. This is a new role, in that a role vacancy allowed an internal realignment to prepare the organisation for future opportunities.

Core responsibilities of the role include:

  • Oversight and delivery of the Annual Communications Plan - internal and external – corporate, community, events and high performance, as well as the Hockey Foundation, through a range of channels both digital and traditional
  • Reviewing and delivering the Stakeholder management plan including the Foundation, our donors and our Black Sticks alumni
  • Developing messaging, tone of voice, communications approach and execution for the organisation
  • Lead the interaction with and management of the media, proactively and reactively for the organisation, the Foundation and the Vantage Black Sticks
  • Writing and developing content for eDM’s, website, video’s, marketing campaigns etc
  • Lead and deliver key organisational publications including the Annual Report, Strategy Reports, regular newsletters
  • Provide communication insights, risk mitigation/issues management and media training support
  • Initiating and delivering PR activities for the organisation including the Vantage Black Sticks.

This role will suit a person with experience in:

  • Communications planning, messaging development and execution
  • Managing the media and maximising the exposure of our teams, brands and programmes especially on television
  • Sports communication at a national or regional level including communicating with high performing sports teams
  • Managing and delivering corporate communications such as Annual Reports

Skills required in this role are:

  • A Bachelors qualification (or equivalent) in communications and /or media
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong track record in media management and delivery
  • Content writing and creativity; photographic skills and video desirable
  • High attention to detail, with exceptional project management skills
  • Proficient in using software packages including MS Office 365, Fuseworks and Meltwater
  • Strong understanding of CRM systems and communications platforms like Campaign Monitor, Mail Chimp etc.
  • Strong relationship building skills

To be successful in this role you will be:

  • Self-motivated and show initiative
  • A team player who can work cross-functionally and collaboratively
  • A passion for sport (not necessarily hockey)
  • Able to juggle multiple priorities and challenging deadlines
  • Enjoy working in a dynamic, fast paced environment
