About the role

The successful applicant will report to an experienced associate, Sam Davies, and be involved with all aspects of Sam's work. He or she will ultimately be responsible to, and will also work with, the practice principal, Geoff Clews, one of New Zealand's leading specialist tax counsel.

While our first priority is to ensure client work is attended to efficiently and to the highest standard, we all have family and community commitments that are balanced with work. Training is primarily on the job, but CPD commitments are funded.

Life in chambers is not like a large firm. Although it is important to earn your keep, we are not ruled by our time sheets and a reasonable commitment to pro bono work and community initiatives is encouraged. You will be expected to be a self-starter and will be encouraged to develop professional contacts which benefit you and the practice.

Remuneration will be competitive and will reflect qualifications, experience and the contribution you can make.

Skills and experience

Admitted to the Bar of the New Zealand High Court, ideally with one or two years PAE.

Knowledge and understanding of New Zealand taxation law and concepts, and of tax administration.

The ability to assimilate and analyse information quickly, especially financial information.

A clear and persuasive writing style. 

An interest in civil and criminal litigation in tax and trusts matters. 

Preferably some experience in Court.

A good manner with people facing a crisis.

A good sense of humour and the ability to get on well in a small team.
